The 944 had only one reason to be. Volkswagen had no intention of producing the engine mounted on the 924 and Porsche had to replace it if it wanted to support the increase in the range of its attack model. The case wanted a “V8 vehicle” derived from the one of the 928 to occupy exactly the same volume as the inclined 4-cylinder of the 924. The Porsche followed this road though, in the end, the Porsche 944 engine would have had no common component with that of 928 .
This engine refers to the V8 for the aluminum monoblock. The bore is 78.9 mm, while the stroke has been stretched to bring the displacement to 2479 cc. Balancing shafts to reduce vibration and fully electronic engine management complete the 944 innovation framework. Porsche maintained the best of the 924 – the Transaxle system and suspension – and opted for a “soft” stylistic evolution of the 924 look. Carrera GT. Progress has been enormous. Sales of the 944 gradually diminished only in the mid-1980s, a difficult period for its manufacturer. But Porsche has not given up on the evolution of this model
The basic version switched to 2.7 liters while the Porsche 944 S2 with a 3-liter engine and a more powerful Turbo made their appearance. There was nothing else to exploit the potential of that plan. The range has also been enriched by a Cabriolet version, characterized by two improvised rear seats and a less successful line, in particular with the bonnet raised, compared to the closed version. Despite this evolution, the 944 had now reached the end of his career. And Porsche handled the situation like it did with 924: it turned it into 968 in 1991
